SUMMARY:What the Numbers Tell Us: Reading the Religious Revival in an Age of Bad Surveys
DESCRIPTION:You have probably seen the headlines. Across Canada\, the United States\, and Europe\, there are reports of a religious revival led by young people\, and especially by young men returning to Christianity. &nbsp\;What should we make of these stories? This talk works through the best available American evidence. I ask whether the long decline in American religiosity has genuinely stopped\, whether it has reversed\, or whether what we are seeing is a post-pandemic rebound mistaken for a revival. Along the way\, you will learn what surveys can and cannot tell us about religious change\, and why a single survey is not enough to establish a trend. I'll also explain why the gender gap in religion is closing\; hint - it is not for the reasons the headlines suggest.

SUMMARY:The Myth of Decline: Rethinking the Story of the Canadian Church
DESCRIPTION:The dominant story of Christianity in Canada is one of decline: fewer people attending\, churches closing\, denominations shrinking\, and religious influence fading. But what if that story is only partly true? Drawing on longitudinal data from Canadian congregations\, this talk examines the difference between institutional decline and religious change. It explores church closures\, consolidation\, migration\, congregational growth\, changing denominational patterns\, and the emergence of new forms of Christian community. Rather than asking simply whether Christianity is declining\, the talk asks a more useful question:&nbsp\;what exactly is declining\, what is growing\, and what is being transformed?&nbsp\;The result is a more complicated picture of Canadian Christianity\, one in which genuine decline exists alongside resilience\, redistribution\, demographic change\, and significant pockets of growth. The challenge is not to replace a pessimistic narrative with an optimistic one\, but to develop a more empirically accurate account of the changing Canadian church.\n\n

SUMMARY:The Stories Congregations Tell: Flourishing in the Face of Transition and Change
DESCRIPTION:Congregations are story-telling communities. The stories they tell\, which link a community's past\, present\, and future\, can play an important role in whether a congregation flourishes or not. This session builds on a collaborative book project – The Stories Congregations Tell – centered on detailed case study research led out of the Flourishing Congregations Institute\, housed at Ambrose University. Featuring seven dynamic Canadian congregations across theological traditions and geographical regions\, attention will be given to social scientific analysis and theological reflection on the stories congregations tell and the function those stories play for a congregation's culture\, along with practical and hopeful applications to arise from this research.

SUMMARY:Who volunteers? Initial findings from the Regional Engagement Atlas of Churches
DESCRIPTION:One year since the official launch of the Regional Engagement Atlas of Churches (REACH) project\, we now begin to analyze the data and present our initial findings. This talk explores the question of "who volunteers?" — investigating the demographic and socioeconomic data of Canadian church volunteers\, as well as volunteers who reach out to their communities beyond their local congregation. It begins to paint the picture of how and why volunteers in a variety of Canadian churches choose to engage in volunteer activities\, while also promoting the REACH project as a means of collecting meaningful data on your congregation.
